Abstract

Objectives. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of certain socio-demographic attributes and personality factors on employee satisfaction, and take advantage of the results to implement better personnel management.

Methods. A set of questionnaires was developed by choosing questions from selected studies pertaining to employee satisfaction and by referring to a 5-factor personality analysis model. The data included 269 employees from a total sample 426, working in 21 dental clinics conveniently located in metropolitan areas in Korea. With these data, SPSS (ver. 12.0) was utilized for factor analysis, ANOVA, and regression analysis.

Results. Some statistical differences in task satisfaction were observed depending on differing occupational groups and on educational levels, while the difference in workplace satisfaction occurred only among occupational groups. In particular, turnover intention among the socio-demographic attributes was shown to significantly influence employee satisfaction. Furthermore, factors such as conscientiousness and extroversions from the 5-factors were observed to have an effect on employee satisfaction with a high degree of statistical significance.

Conclusions. Employee satisfaction consisting of task and workplace satisfaction can be improved by managing turnover intention, as well as by employing workers with particular personality factors, which contributed to better personnel management in the health service fields.
